Hanging Chair with a Stand or Fixed to the Ceiling

The stand version rests on its own metal structure, needs no building work and can move from the living room to the terrace when the weather or the layout changes. Hanging from the ceiling frees the floor and looks cleaner, but it belongs only on a beam or a solid slab, with an anchor rated for at least four times the weight of the heaviest person who will use it. A drywall ceiling is not an option. If you rent, or you are unsure what sits above the plaster, the stand is the sensible choice.

How Much Space It Needs Around It

Leave 60 cm clear on each side of the seat and about 40 cm behind, because the chair swings whether or not anyone pushes it. In height, the lowest point of the seat should sit 40 to 45 cm off the floor so you can get in and out without effort. Before you commit to a spot, tape the diameter of the chair onto the floor and walk around it for a day. It is the fastest way to find out whether the corner you picked is genuinely spare.

Indoor and Outdoor Use in a Humid Climate

Synthetic fibre weaves handle damp and sun far better than natural fibres, so those are the ones we recommend for open terraces and balconies in rainy cities. Even so, no cushion should live permanently outdoors: bring the cushions under cover when the chair is not in use and it will hold its colour for years. Indoors, the only real upkeep is checking the joints and the top hook every few months.
