A Bench at the Foot of the Bed or by the Door

In a bedroom, the bench should measure 70 to 80 percent of the bed width: around 100 to 120 cm for a double and 140 to 150 cm for a king. Leave 10 to 15 cm between it and the edge of the mattress so you can make the bed without knocking into it. In an entryway, the useful height is 42 to 45 cm, the same as a chair, which is what lets you put shoes on without crouching. If a basket fits underneath, the bench stops being decorative and starts solving the daily clutter.

Choosing an Armchair People Will Actually Sit In

A reading armchair needs a high back and a seat 45 to 50 cm deep, so you can sit right back without the front edge pressing into your legs. A conversation armchair can be lower and more open, because people perch rather than settle. Before deciding, think about how long it will be occupied at a stretch: half an hour with coffee tolerates almost any seat, two hours with a book does not. Measure your doorway and stair turn as well, which is where most armchair purchases come undone.
