How High to Hang a Pendant Over a Table or Island

Above a dining table, the bottom edge of a pendant belongs 75 to 90 cm over the top: enough to light the plates without anyone dodging it to see across the table. Over a kitchen island the reference is the same, and if you hang several, space them about 60 cm centre to centre and leave 15 cm clear at each end of the counter. In tall rooms, raise the fitting 5 cm for every extra 30 cm of ceiling height.

How Much Light and What Tone Each Room Needs

For living rooms and bedrooms, a warm light near 2700 K creates the atmosphere most people want at home; for kitchens and work areas, 3000 to 4000 K makes it easier to see what you are doing. Rather than thinking in watts, look at lumens: a living room lands around 1500 to 3000 lumens spread across several sources, and spread is the operative word. One ceiling fixture flattens a room, while three points of light at different heights make it feel lived in.
