How Many Cushions and in What Sizes

A three seat sofa carries five cushions well, a two seater takes three. Odd numbers read more naturally than perfectly symmetrical pairs. Start with the largest in the corners at 50 by 50 cm, follow with 45 by 45 cm, and finish with a 30 by 50 cm rectangle at the front. That progression of sizes is what makes a sofa look arranged rather than simply full.

Combining Colours and Textures Without Getting It Wrong

Pick a dominant colour already present in the room, a secondary one to support it, and a third as an accent used sparingly. Then mix scales: one plain, one textured weave and one pattern, rather than three patterns competing with each other. If the sofa is neutral, decorative cushions are the cheapest way to change the mood by season; if the sofa already carries strong colour or weave, keep the cushions in nearby tones and let texture do the work.

Fillings, Covers and Care

A cushion looks best when the insert measures 2 to 5 cm larger than the cover, because that fills out the corners instead of leaving them collapsed. Siliconised fibre holds its shape with little effort and is the practical choice in humid climates, while down feels softer but needs regular plumping. Look for covers with a concealed zip so you can wash them separately, which is what genuinely extends the life of a decorative cushion.
