Bar Stool Height for Your Counter or Island

The practical rule is 25 to 30 cm between the seat and the surface you lean on. Most kitchen bars sit at 105 or 110 cm and call for a stool with a 75 to 80 cm seat, while a 90 cm island or counter works with seats of 60 to 65 cm. Measure your counter from the floor before choosing, because a 10 cm difference is what separates a stool people use from one that stays empty.

Backrest, Swivel or Plain Stool

A backless stool tucks fully under the counter and clears the kitchen when nobody is sitting, which matters in a walkway. A backrest changes the use entirely: if the bar replaces your dining table and people linger over conversation, their backs will notice. A swivel makes getting in and out easier at bars set against a wall, though it depends on a well built mechanism, since that is the part doing the most work over the years.

How Many Bar Stools Fit at Your Island

Allow 70 cm of width per seat for round stools, and up to 75 cm when they have a backrest or armrests. A 150 cm bar takes two people comfortably and three at a squeeze, while 210 cm and up seats three with room to spare. Check the counter overhang as well, because without at least 25 cm of clearance at the front, knees hit the cabinetry.
