Dining Table Sizes for 6 and 8 People

As a rule, allow about 60 cm of table width per person, and leave 90 to 100 cm of clear space between the table edge and the wall or nearest piece of furniture so chairs pull out comfortably. A rectangular dining table of roughly 160 cm seats six, while 200 cm and up is comfortable for eight. If your dining area is under 3 metres wide, measure the walkway before you fall for a tabletop, because circulation space is what decides whether a room feels usable.

Round or Rectangular Dining Tables

Rectangular dining tables make efficient use of long walls and are the easier choice when you seat six or more, or when the room is narrow. A round dining table softens compact or square rooms, removes corners in high traffic areas, and keeps everyone within easy conversation distance, which is why it suits apartments and everyday meals for four. If you entertain often in a small space, a round top on a central base gives you the most flexibility, since there are no corner legs to block an extra chair.

A metal base carries the load without the bulk of four thick wooden legs, which frees up legroom and often lets you seat one more person at the ends. In humid climates, wipe spills promptly, use mats under hot dishes, and keep the table out of direct afternoon sun to protect the finish.
