How Tall Should a Coffee Table Be Next to Your Sofa

The comfortable answer is a top level with the sofa seat, or 2 to 5 cm below it. At that height you reach a glass or the remote without stretching or bending your back. Most sofas have seats 42 to 45 cm off the floor, which makes a 40 to 45 cm coffee table the safe range. If your sofa is deep and low, bring the table down with it. A tall table in front of a low sofa is the most repeated mistake in apartment living rooms.

Distance and Proportion Against the Sofa

Leave 40 to 45 cm between the edge of the sofa and the table: enough to stretch your legs out and to pass sideways without turning your body. For length, the table should measure around two thirds of the sofa, which keeps the room in proportion instead of leaving a small top adrift in the middle. If your sofa is 200 cm, aim for a table of 120 to 140 cm.

Round, Rectangular or Two Small Tables

A round coffee table is the answer where there are children, narrow walkways or an L shaped living room, because there are no corners to catch and you can walk around any side of it. A rectangular top follows a long sofa better and gives more usable surface for serving. Two small tables, or a nesting set, suit rooms that change use: pull them apart when guests arrive and push them together the rest of the time.
