Choosing the Right Bed Size for Your Dog or Cat

Measure your pet from nose to the base of the tail while they lie stretched out, then add 15 to 20 cm. That is the internal measurement the bed needs, not the external one printed on the label. Watch how they sleep as well: dogs that curl up feel secure in round beds with a raised rim, while those who sprawl on their side need a wide flat base. If your puppy is still growing, choose for the breed's estimated adult size.

Raised or Padded, Depending on Climate and Age

A raised bed lets air move underneath and keeps a pet cool, which matters in warm cities and for thick coated dogs, and it lifts them off a cold floor in the early hours. A low padded bed is what older animals or those with sensitive joints look for, because getting in and out asks for no jump. If your pet is getting on in years, prioritise entry height above every other feature.

Cleaning and Everyday Durability

Choose beds with a removable zipped cover, because odour and hair build up in the textile long before the structure gives way. Vacuum the bed weekly and wash the cover every two or three weeks with a mild detergent and no fabric softener, which can irritate some animals' skin.
