Dining table sizes for 4, 6, and 8 people

Six woven dining chairs around a rectangular dining table with generous spacing

The right dining-table size depends on two things: how many people you want to seat and how much clear space remains around it. A table that is too large restricts circulation, while one that is too small forces plates, chairs, and guests to compete for space.

Suggested sizes by number of people

Use these measurements as a starting point. Leg placement, base thickness, and chair width can all change the true capacity.

6160–180 × 90 cm120–140 cm diameter
8200–240 × 90–100 cm150–160 cm diameter

If you use wide chairs or armchairs, choose the upper end of the range. Compact armless chairs may work with a smaller table, provided the base does not obstruct them.

How much space each person needs

Allow approximately 55–60 cm of table edge per diner for comfortable everyday use. An informal occasion may tolerate a tighter arrangement, but it should not define your daily layout. Remember to allow room for plates, serving dishes, and a centrepiece.

Clearance between the table and wall

Your table's footprint extends beyond its top because chairs need room to move. As a practical guide, leave about 90 cm between the table edge and a wall or other furniture. If people regularly walk behind the chairs, more clearance will feel better.

How to test the size at home

  1. Mark the tabletop dimensions on the floor with painter's tape.
  2. Add the area that chairs will occupy around it.
  3. Walk the routes to doors, the kitchen, and main circulation areas.
  4. Open nearby drawers and doors to check for collisions.

This simple test makes the table's scale tangible before you buy.

Rectangular, round, or square?

Rectangular table

This shape suits long dining rooms and arranges larger groups efficiently along two sides. Check the leg positions: they, rather than the top length alone, determine how many chairs fit.

Round table

A round table encourages conversation and removes corners, which can help in tight circulation areas. A central base may make chair placement more flexible, although large diameters need a generous room.

Square table

A square table works well in a similarly proportioned room and creates a balanced arrangement for four. At larger sizes, it can occupy substantial width and place opposite diners far apart.

Dining-table size for four people

A rectangular table 120–140 cm long is usually a useful starting point. In a small dining room, look for slender legs or a base that preserves knee room. A round table with a 90–110 cm diameter creates a sociable layout.

Dining-table size for six people

Consider approximately 160–180 cm for a rectangular table. If end chairs will be used regularly, make sure the legs do not block them. A six-seat round table requires a larger diameter and more open floor area around it.

Dining-table size for eight people

A length of around 200–240 cm is a reasonable guide for eight settings. Before choosing it, check access to the room, door and lift dimensions, and the manoeuvring space required during delivery.

Common sizing mistakes

  • Counting the total length without measuring between the legs.
  • Measuring the table but forgetting the chair pull-out zone.
  • Choosing chairs later without checking their width.
  • Blocking doors, drawers, balconies, or circulation routes.
  • Buying for rare gatherings rather than everyday use.
